A Tree Came Down on Your House. Here's the First Hour.

Get everyone out of the rooms under the impact, including the floor below it. A tree that has stopped moving has not necessarily finished moving. Wet root plates keep rotating for hours, and a trunk resting on a roof truss can shift when the wind comes back around.

Do not touch anything near a power line, and assume every downed line is live. In Georgia, the utility owns the line to the weatherhead and you own the mast and the drop to the house — if the tree pulled the service away from your wall, that is a call to Georgia Power or your EMC before it is a call to anyone else.

Photograph everything before it is moved, from several angles, including the wide shot that shows the whole tree and the whole house in one frame. Adjusters pay on documentation, and the single most expensive mistake homeowners make is cleaning up first and claiming second. We photograph as we cut for exactly this reason, but your own pictures from before the crew arrives are worth more than ours.

Tarping is a judgment call. If the hole is open and more rain is coming, cover it — but not by climbing onto a roof that just took a direct hit. Roof decking under a fallen trunk is not something to test with your own weight at night in the rain.

Then call someone who will take the tree off the structure in the right order. The limbs holding the trunk in place come off last, not first, and the cut sequence on a loaded tree is the difference between a controlled removal and a second impact. If it is on your house, call us at (678) 548-7909 — storm call-outs run around the clock.
